Wednesday 9/13/1982 PITTSBURGH - Jay Johnstone got a standing ovation from 21570 fans in Pittsburgh, who witnessed his 2000th career hit. In 16 years of big league action so far, Jay has compiled a batting average of .267, along with 244 homeruns and 1061 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' His hit in the 4th inning was a single off Floyd Chiffer.

Howard Johnson and Tim Lollar are Rookies of the Month

Yankees shortstop Howard Johnson was named Rookie of the Month in the American League for August. He hit ,324 with 5 homers and 15 Rbis in 105 AB. He had a ,374 on-base percentage and a ,543 slugging percentage.

Johnson was co-winner of the award in May and is one of the best candidate for the Rookie of the Year award, along with Wade Boggs (Oak), Juan Eischelberger (Min) and Harold Baines (Bos).

Johnson finished ahead of starter Eischelberger (4-1, 2,91) and teammate 3b Hubie Brooks (,293-2-19).

In the National League, a perfect record of 4-0 and an E.R.A. of 1,74 gave the title to Mets starter Tim Lollar. He struck out 33 batters in 46,2 IP, giving up 22 walks.

A second-round pick in 1980, Lollar was a big factor in the Mets' run at the NL East pennant.

George Bell, rightfielder for the Pirates, finished a close second after hitting ,342-3-19. Willie McGee (,285, 9 stolen bases) was also considered.

Thursday 8/31/1982 ST. LOUIS - Reggie Jackson doesn't try and think about the fact that retirement is looming, today he defied time with his three homeruns in a 12-2 win over St. Louis. A 423 feet drive to right-center marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Larry Rothschild in the 2nd inning. A pitch from Guy Hoffman in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 418 feet from home plate in center field. His 3rd shot, off Guy Hoffman in the 7th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in right-center. Overall he got 4 hits in 5 AB, with FOUR runs scored and collecting 8 RBI. In 8180 career at bats, he has hit 557 homeruns and collected 1423 RBI. It's pretty obvious that he will enter the Hall of Fame some day! The final score of the game was 12-2.

Montreal Expo Willie Crawford collects his 2,000th hit!

Thursday 8/24/1982 HOUSTON - Montreal's leftfielder Willie Crawford was in good mood after the game against Houston, and he had every reason as he made some history while collecting his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1979 where he hit .309 with 24 homeruns and 81 RBI. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important
thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' With one out in the 6th inning, Willie drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.

Kansas City Royal Al Oliver collects his 2,000th career hit!

Sunday 8/13/1982 KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's Al Oliver showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Boston on Sunday. His best year so far was 1972 where he hit .301 with 24 homeruns and 118 RBI. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' With one out in the 3rd inning, Al drilled a double, causing a standing
ovation from the crowd.

Texas Ranger Ron Blomberg collects his 2,000th career hit!

Monday 8/7/1982 SEATTLE - Texas' leftfielder Ron Blomberg had already some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 1980 where he hit .295 with 24 homeruns and 95 RBI. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' His hit in the 6th inning was a single off Rick Honeycutt.

Yankee Bill Sudakis hits for the cycle

Wednesday 8/2/1982 NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s designated hitter Bill Sudakis once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Oakland's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Wednesday. A 433 feet drive to left-center marked his 1st hit, a solo homerun off Danny Darwin in the
1st inning. It tied the ballgame at 1. A RBI triple off Danny Darwin in the 3rd inning, accounted for his 2nd hit. A pitch from Danny Darwin in the 6th inning left his bat for a double. A single in the 8th off Vern Geishert accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Bill did drive in 3 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He now has a total of 72 hits this season, accounting for a .276 batting average. 8 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Bill. Tito Landrum was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 7/27/1982.
